Where To Eat In JAMAICA: Grab a Rum Punch @ The PELICAN BAR, The Caribbean Sea

Somewhere in the Caribbean Sea pelicans play.  With wide wings they swoop down on blue waters scooping up food, taking a dip, or quenching their thirst amongst dolphins, sea turtles and aquatic beings that hang around the coast of Jamaica like tourists on vacation.

And while visiting the Caribbean’s most preeminent island you too can get a glimpse of the exciting life at sea at the enigmatic PELICAN BAR, a tree-house-like ocean-shack created by local Jamaicans, known for serving up Red Stripe, local cocktails, and a slice of paradise for tourists who are willing to leave the island and visit the “unauthorized by the state” bar.

Halfway between the Black River and Treasure Beach, The Pelican Bar is located about a mile or so off the coast of the St. Elizabeth Parish in Jamaica.  The thirty minute boat ride is an adventure in itself when sea mammals come by the boat to say hello!  Inside the Pelican Bar remnants of American visitors line the wooden structure with state license plates, university flags, and other tacky paraphernalia.

The Pelican Bar literally offers an escape from reality.  Perched on a sand dune where pelicans rest, it’s a nice getaway from hotel-life or life on land.  Grab a drink and sunbathe on the bar’s deck, chat up the locals running the place, or take in the freedom of the ocean air and your trip to Jamaica is pretty much complete.  A serene thought, “It doesn’t get better than this,” is sure to glide past your mind as your soul aligns with the Caribbean tranquility.

Destroyed by Hurricane Ivan in 2004, Pelican Bar was re-built and has continued to be one of the island’s best-kept secrets!  Ask your hotel, the concierge or a local about arranging a boat-ride out (by the way, Captain Dennis is the BEST – check out his website and book him if you can!)… A real treat, Pelican Bar an impressive and casual bar that’s meant for sheer relaxation.  No bathroom, nothing fancy.  Just good times, good vibes, and good drinks at The Pelican Bar!
