LE DIPLOMATE Brings A Taste of PARIS to Washington DC
There’s good eating and then there’s eatin’ good - eating so good, in fact, the fare’s authenticity alone can mentally transport a diner to a specific region where the classic provender is served with distinct style, natural grace and unique preparations. And thanks to the new Washington DC hot spot LE DIPLOMATE, Washingtonians no longer have to bear a six hour flight to France for a little taste of Paris. Le Diplomate is so fantastic, it takes eating good to new peaks!
Red and cream highlights, light wood paneling and accents, and crowds pouring out the door like a Broadway theater, Le Diplomate, located at 1601 14th Street, NW, has all the necessary decorations in order to rival that of New York’s staple bistro Pastis. Luminous walls make for a bright space where bustling crowds scramble for bar seating, cramped tables, and create boisterous surroundings. Fast-moving runners and hurried servers in white button downs and aprons seem a bit aloof during swift service that can easily make one feel rushed although it can take up to two hours of waiting before actually scoring a table without a reservation.
But like Paris itself, one does not visit Le Diplomate for the hospitality. Food prevails here where fresh pastries, seafood towers, escargot, steak frites, or regional French cheeses, and then some are all featured on the expansive menu of French classics perfect for breakfasts, lunches or dinners that are intimate or celebratory!
The country duck terrine is a rich and smokey, well-balanced pate that was beautifully served with a grilled onion. The powerful taste lingers on the palate in the most delicious way, and the chunky texture is heaven sent. The steak tartare is a well-seasoned masterpiece of texture and delight. Fresh and savory raw beef is served with crusty baguette slices, and it’s magnificent when spread out on the bread basket pieces as well… This dish is clean and unoffensive and is worth a visit to Le Diplomate alone.
Main courses are equally scrumptious. The lavish cheeseburger is a decadent mountain of meat and fries! The duck breast is a regal dish of epic flavor with lavender honey, artichoke and almonds, and the moules frites (mussels & fries) are a soul-warming feast that’s garlicky and buttery to taste! There’s also beef bourguignon, lobster, veal sweetbreads, steak au poivre, salads, and sides galore. It’s difficult choosing at Le Diplomate, not because there isn’t enough, but because there’s more than enough and everything sounds oh-so-good.
When the food arrives at Le Diplomate, senses are heightened and the experience gets even better! Move over bread basket, and say hello to the sauces, the dips and the actual entrees dazzling on the plates!
With dinner entree prices skimming the $30 mark, expect meals at Le Diplomate to cost top dollar should appetizers, dessert and liquor be included. It’s not cheap to go to Paris and it won’t be cheap trying to eat like a Parisian. But if you can deal with the quick service, long waits, and crowds, Le Diplomate is worth it! The perfectly prepared fare is classic, and the authentic bistro vibe is definite. Le Diplomate is a great restaurant – it’s hip, it’s smart, and it’s an awesome and necessary addition to the thriving restaurant scene in the nation’s capital. Le Diplomate delivers on all accounts and is a hands-down favorite for first-rate French fare!
