Trendy dining can be a tricky situation.  Whether it is an attempt to stay current or due to increased demand, popular ingredients, dishes and recipes wind up on a restaurant’s menu to offer healthy selections, diversify tastes, and keep diners hip to the streets.  Have you also noticed that kale (the same greens my mama used to mix with collards and mustard back in the day) is practically on every menu in every restaurant these days?

However, when a restaurant gets it right with the hip foods meant for the Gods, Burgers & Bourbon has to tell you about it!  Washington DC’s LINCOLN accomplishes an amazing feat of offering innovative takes on classic dishes with trendy food items, to create contemporary masterpieces any president could appreicate!  Located off of Thomas Circle at 1110 Vermont Avenue, NW, presidential presentations at Lincoln are almost too good to devour, recipes are insanely divine and the ambiance is alive with elegance.

As if a floor of pennies isn’t enough to entice you, Lincoln’s seasonal menu showcases simplistic market fresh dishes by Chef Demetrio Zavala crafted from fresh ingredients supplied by local Washington DC farmers, daily caught seafood, and artisanal meat from ranchers around the region. Abraham Lincoln’s presence is undeniable as some of the former president’s favorite foods including oysters, gingerbread and chicken fricassee are all featured on the menu!

And while many are still buzzing about one of other favorites – Founding Farmers, the newer Lincoln is a bit more stylish in detail with luxe leather booths, colorful designs, pop art galore, and  comfort food that will send your taste buds soaring.

Start with one of Lincoln’s deviled eggs selections and you can’t go wrong!  There’s traditional, black truffle, salmon and even fried okra eggs, but the smoked bacon jam and the candied jalapenos (as photographed above) are outstanding creamy sensations that burst with flavor and keep the mouth salivating for the next bite!

Lincoln’s truffle hushpuppies are another gem appetizer!  The sweet corn fritters with black truffle peelings are rich and savory, served with an amazing chive aioli.  The decadent dish is meant to be shared, but can easily be wolfed down by one (trust me – I know).  Each crispy and battered ball of goodness melts in your mouth, but not in your hands.

With a menu that features duck sausage, molasses steak, brie and peaches, fried green tomatoes, chicken & waffles, organic kale salad, and Maryland crab tater tots, Lincoln delivers vogue fare that is succulently fresh, pleasingly different, and undeniably good!

The braised BBQ pork belly served with cheddar grits and topped with fried okra must be the magnum opus of Lincoln’s entrees.  Opulent and full bodied, the small portion is perfectly served with a wonderful medley of texture and taste.  The creamy grits, the juicy and tender pork, and the crispy okra make for a lavish dish that is warming and well-rounded.

Lincoln’s shrimp & grits is another masterpiece meant to be savored and appreciated.  Ingeniously prepared, the cast iron serving is heaped in a delicious shrimp broth and loaded with red peppers, lardons (aka bacon bits), chives and toasted bread crumbs!  I could go on and on about this dish, but as delicious as the image appears, it’s a must try for anyone who loves southern cuisine with a twist!  Delicious and hedonistic, Lincoln has the best shrimp and grits in all of Washington DC – period.

As if that were not enough to convince you that Lincoln is everything a restaurant should be, go to Lincoln just for the brussels sprouts!  The best I’ve ever had, Lincoln’s Crispy Brussels Sprouts, are prepared with lardons, smoked peaches and key lime honey!  Sweet and firm, the invigorating dish is a beautiful mix of colors and flavors, tastes and textures, warmth and gratification.  One of the best side dishes in the world, Lincoln does not disappoint with this exceptionally good version of the staple vegetable!

It’s been a long time since I’ve visited a place like Lincoln.  Creative small plates with everything UNDER $20 and amazingly good food, Lincoln knows that everything is better shared.  They offer great happy hour discounts and serve up fresh food with quality recipes in a sophisticated setting.  This new DC discovery has become one of my greatest finds ever!  I proudly salute them and name them September’s RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH!  Now, I gotta figure out another reason to return to the capital, just so I can visit Lincoln!
