Jean Georges Vongerichten is one of the BEST chefs in the world, but he obviously was not in the kitchen when I stopped in his Washington DC restaurant J&G STEAKHOUSE last week.

Located at 515 15th Street N.W., J&G is located inside the chic W Hotel and is steps from the White House.  Sleek, sophisticated and clean designs make for a glamorous decor accented with oversized windows, leather chairs, velvet booths, and the color red.  The ambiance is sexy and inviting with a New York appeal – the perfect pizzaz for some hip allure to the stodgy political town.

I had visited J&G for breakfast when I stayed at the W over a year ago, but last week was the first time I had gone for lunch.

As with all other Jean Georges establishments, steep prices keep J&G exclusive, but it wasn’t too bad for lunch.  Soups, salads, sandwiches, cod, chicken, tuna, and, of course, steak range from $9 – $54 dollar meals.  J&G delightfully offers an Express Lunch menu that offers two dishes from a separate menu for $19, so naturally, that’s where I ordered from.

Pickled chiles and a Yuzu dip (Japanese sauce) provided a nice touch for the beautiful and crispy calamari that was battered to perfection.  Savory and rich, each delectable bite of this classic appetizer had me wanting more.  It was great, but still can’t beat the Bistro Bis calamari.

I’m sorry to say the meal’s major disappointment came with the salmon salad.  I ordered the salmon medium and it practically came out as sashimi, so I had to send it back.  The sesame seeds added a mix of texture and enhanced the presentation but then the carrot ginger dressing did not sit well on my palate. The flavor of the buttery lettuce was totally lost from the drenching of the dreadful dressing, aside from that, the meat, although succulent, lacked seasoning and was totally bland.  No wonder this dish had been on the discounted menu!  Geez!

Perhaps this salad just wasn’t for me, but either way, next time I go to J&G Steakhouse, I’ll gladly order the calamari to start, but will look for a burger or steak for my main course.

BJC.

Must be one of those places where the best dishes are reflected in their specialties. However, the presentations are mouth-watering.

So, I was correct: while looking at the photos as I read the review, I was thinking to myself: 'that salmon and salad doesn't look right!" (LOL) I appreciate this very honest review! I love salmon and it is indeed true that not everyone can get it right. The calamari however does look and sound like it was perfect. Hopefully upon your next visit everything will be great! :)
