Pork Sliders, The Bacon Bar Menu and Shrimp with Grits at CHEF GEOFF’s, Tyson’s Corner, VA
If you’ve been keeping up with the news, then you would agree it has been impossible to miss the Bacon craze sweeping the nation! Whether it’s Jack In The Box’s Bacon Shake or Burger King’s new summer menu featuring a Bacon Sundae, pork is popping up everywhere in some innovative recipes from fast food chains to high end dining spots. And while my instinctive love of swine has not prompted any desire to try the two former desserts (I just can’t imagine bacon in my ice cream), last night I stopped by CHEF GEOFF in Tyson’s Corner, Virginia for dinner and was thrilled to stumble upon their BACON BAR MENU. Nestled between Hermes and Tiffany’s across the street from the legendary Tyson’s Corner Mall, I immediately recognized that Chef Geoff’s was going to be something special!
Offered exclusively on Wednesday’s and Thursday’s at all four DMV locations, chef Geoff Tracy‘s Bacon Bar menu features everything from pork-themed appetizers, entrees, desserts and even libations. The one thing missing from the limited but varied menu was one of my personal favorites – Pork Belly! ! But instead of completely ignoring the supplemented menu, we started with the PORK SLIDERS! And what an awesome decision! The tender and marinated pulled pork drenched in the sweet and tangy barbecue sauce, coupled with crispy onion strings and chives on a toasted thick but soft bun made these THE BEST SLIDERS EVER!!!! The flavor and texture combo was simply sublime! These little pork burgers alone make it worth a trip to Chef Geoff! Ever heard of pigs in a blanket? Well, Chef Geoff’s pork sliders were pigs in a lavish duvet!
We also had the calamari which was a bit on the salty side, but the three sauces (a mayo, an arugula aioli and marinara) made for splendid flavor and fun dipping with this standard fried recipe.
While Chef Geoff’s started off strong, I began to get nervous upon first bite of the crispy oysters. The batter was too light, the oysters were too small and the seasoning was too awful. Paired with cole slaw, these little fritters fell completely flat in taste and texture! (I mean did you read my review of the fried oysters at DC’s Hank’s Oyster Bar? - Now, those are crispy oysters!) Whatever you do, save your money and stay away from this dish at Chef Geoff’s. It’s a total disappointment.
Thank goodness, after all of those appetizers, I still had room for my Big Shrimp and Gouda Grits entree! It was worth every calorific bite! Topping this american staple with andouille sausage, peppers and tomatoes, packed this dish with flavor and gave it a Louisiana spin, making it extra-southern, hearty and irresistible! The chef could have scaled back a bit on the salt, but the avant-garde recipe and presentation still made taste buds scream and yearn for more after each succulent morsel!
I did not actually try the spaghetti and meatballs, but the pasta appeared to be made on the premises as it was thick and meaty, and I hear the meatballs were juicy and savory! Topped with ricotta and seasoned with fresh basil, the spaghetti and meatballs looked heavenly.
We had S’mores for dessert from a menu that also featured Cap’n Crunch Bread Pudding! In fact, generally speaking the Chef Geoff menu is pretty impressive! Soups and salads, sandwiches and pizzas, and entrees including raviolis, fra diavolo, steak, tuna and shrimp etouffee, there’s something for everyone at the upscale and fairly pricey Chef Geoff’s. While burgers and sandwiches stay under $20, entrees such as the NY Strip will cost you about $40.
The service at Chef Geoff’s was extraordinary! Our server Maly was super friendly, beyond accommodating, and well-versed on every dish! And while I did find a couple of dishes to be a tad salty, Chef Geoff’s is a great dining option amidst a contemporary Americana decor. And whether you’re hanging with family and friends or foes and colleagues, Chef Geoff is an all-inclusive scene that will hit the spot whether you’re looking for something light or a multi-course meal. And yes, even if you, too, have been beguiled by the nation’s new pork trend, Chef Geoff’s is a sure crowd pleaser!
