Celebrating Italian Restaurant Week in NYC @ ROC
While many of fashion’s elite have crossed the pond to take in the shows in Paris, for those of us stuck behind feigning for a taste of Europe, from June 26th through July 6th, New York City is hosting the first ever Italian Restaurant Week, Italian Dine-Out, offering diners special discounted prices on prix fixe lunch and dinner menus at 23 of Manhattan’s finest Italian restaurants, including Cipriani, Serafina and many more!
Sponsored by the Italian Trade Commission as part of the Year of Italian Culture in the US, the Italian Dine-Out offers diners special 3-course menus for lunch ($26) and dinner ($40), allowing New Yorkers to immerse themselves in Italy’s rich flavors and culture in their own neighborhood. Last night, I stopped by participating restaurant ROC, and enjoyed a magnificent meal of delicious decadence in epic proportions!
ROC is a small and intimate authentic Italian restaurant situated in Manhattan’s tony Tribeca neighborhood. Located at 190A Duane Street at Greenwich Avenue, the chic and comely ambiance provides a glimpse into Tuscan fine dining as do the Italian-speaking servers, the homemade pastas, and the house wines. Well-to-do families, en vogue blondes, and Rolex-sporting couples dine at Roc with ease and sophistication. However this seemingly regular “neighborhood” spot could easily impress, intimidate and beguile midtown tourists.
The food is as scrumptious as it sounds. Well portioned meals of fresh meats, Italian cheeses, and trendy vegetables are well seasoned masterpieces of classic Italian fare. The grilled octopus is worth a visit alone. But try the Black Ink Taglierini served with a half lobster and an abundance of cherry tomatoes and you’re instantly in heaven.
Veal, stuffed chicken, steaks, and desserts galore round out the insatiable menu. Roc is pricey but is worth it. It’s understated and cramped, but it’s a delightful spot full of charm and elegance. I loved it and can’t wait to go back. I could not have imagined a better way to dine out Italian style!
